Doctors who switch between buy generic medications and the original products based on who’s footing the bill are likely taking up the price of the state’s Medicare treatment plan, according to a new investigation. Figures released Wednesday show doctors are more likely to ask their pharmacist for buy generic medications when they are paying, but choose the more price originals when the state is covering the price.

The investigation was published by Health Solutions Inc., a pill benefit manager that handles prescriptions for about 15% of Americans. Prescription benefit managers earn more buy generic medications when patients choose cheaper medications. While the Medicare pill benefit has pushed up the country’s overall health care spending, the program’s budget has actually come in below estimates, which federal officials attribute to a greater use and buy generic medications to competition among insurance companies.
